Background
On October 19, 2011, Canada World Youth (CWY) celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Founded in 1971 by the late Honourable Jacques Hébert (1923-2007), Canada World Youth’s mission has remained constant: to increase the ability of people, and especially youth, to participate actively in the development of just, harmonious, and sustainable societies. Our action-oriented and innovative approach has allowed CWY to remain an influential organisation in youth leadership development. Over the years, 34,000 young volunteers have participated in CWY programs, hosted by 11,000 host families located in more than 600 Canadian communities as well as in 67 countries around the world.
To commemorate this milestone, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of the International Year of the Volunteer, CWY held a series of events in collaboration with our youth volunteers, alumni, partner organizations and communities. 40 public engagement activities took place in 40 cities in Canada and abroad during Canada World Youth Week, October 17-23, 2011. Amongst these events were the following:
Proclamations of Canada World Youth Week - October 17-23, 2011
150 municipalities and cities across Canada have proclaimed the week of October 17-23 as CWY Week in their community. These communities have previously, or are currently, one of over 600 Canadian host communities that have hosted our international youth programs. Together we celebrate our 40 years in partnerships with these communities, while giving youth a voice to enhance their visibility in communities, big and small, throughout the country.

Canada World Youth Publication: "Commitment and Impact - 40 Years of Building Youth Leadership"
In celebration of our 40th anniversary, Canada World Youth (CWY) recognised some of its 34,000 alumni in Canada and around the world, parents of young volunteers, host families, present and past staff and Board members, and partners who have been part of our organisation’s history.
The publication showcase their inspirational stories and reflections to demonstrate the impact of the programs that CWY offers since 1971. These bear testimony to the core values, mission and vision of CWY and demonstrate how their actions impact the national and international development. The publication was unveiled at a special ceremony in Ottawa on November 30, 2011.
The testimonies speak about:
- How the individuals were involved with CWY
- How their cultural attitudes/values were challenged during the CWY experience
- What they have done since CWY, what they are currently doing (professionally, personally)
- How their CWY experience has impacted them.
